In preschool we learned to adjust the clocks by “springing forward” or “falling back.”  But this saying doesn’t just apply to the seasonal time change. It holds true of fall 2011’s  debut  of the “smoking slipper” – a throwback to Hugh Hefner’s 70s-style shoe.  

For those of you unsure about the awkward kitten heel or for others bored with the classic ballet flat, look no further than the “smoking slipper.” This flat with more flare and oxford minus the burden of the laces makes a comfortable slip-on an accessory, rather than a necessity.  

The “smoking slipper” is a hot commodity this season – literally. The slippers have graced the runways of New York and Paris fashion week. Alexander McQueen, Donald J. Pliner and Christian Louboutin kicked off the shoe trend with couture fabrics, outrageous embellishments (like tassels, studs and sequins) and outlandish runway prices running close to $1,000. But there’s no need to break the bank to nab a pair. 

The shoes come in all different leathers, fabrics and prints. For the classic look, a la Hugh Hefner, choose a suede duo. Hot suede hues this season are mustard, copper and other “burnt” shades. Topshop makes a variety of reasonably priced suede slippers. The "Manney" navy slipper ($40) is refined yet versatile, while their "Mirage" metal buckle pair ($70) puts a glitzy edge on a solid suede shoe. To replace a pair of multipurpose ballet flats, the slippers come in classic leathers and fabrics – camel, black and beige, to name a few. But not to worry, neutral colors still won’t take away from the trendy statement.

Take a walk on the wild side with another popular trend this season — animal prints. Snake skin, leopard, cheetah and cow prints are only a few among a host of animal prints that “smoking slippers” come in. Aldo makes a pair of “Pratillo” flats made out of calf hair for only $90. This chic duo can be dressed up with slacks and a blazer, or can be slipped on with a pair of rolled boyfriend jeans and a tee. 

With “smoking slippers,” forget any fashion faux pas. With a variety of brands, an array of different styles, and ranging price points, there’s a slipper out there that’s fitting for anyone.
